c64 xmas compo

Not sure if this is the best place but i guess it will do this way 8)
Ok, me and Trance thought about announcing a xmas c64 compo with everything allowed as long as it is xmas-related and startable with "RUN" (yep, also i-hate-christmas and why-i-shot-santa demos are allowed). This isn't 100% sure for now, so it would be nice to have some feedback if such a compo is generally accepted, if anybody want to take part and if you think that "everything into one big compo" is no good idea but we should announce a demo/intro-compo instead.
If there is some interest out there i hope a page about this will be up soon....
so give us your feedback, either here or at : http://62.141.33.128/forum/showthread.php?thread_id=6475&forum_.. Democompo&page=1

thanx,
santa pi

ok, pi. seems that nobody is really interested in such a compo, but the good old days where "magic disk" and "game on" had xmas-compos were great :)

What's the name of that TOM demo? I'd like to see it. :-)

Have you thought about when the deadline will be yet, if there is a compo?

@dane: exactly. when i saw the msi demo i was laughing my ass off. i also loved when around 94/95 it was 'in' in the scene to do stupid lo-res graphics.

Lately Pingo released a very nice demo 'Monsters of Dixn Riah'

I should also have something christ-messy flying around here to contribute after a little brush-up. Nice to see that someone is keeping up that good old 90s tradition of christmas-releases :-).

Ok...
seems like there is really some interest about that compo.

Rules as far as they are up now:
* Every kind of product allowed
* Theme = Christmas (pro or contra)
* Startable by "RUN"

Deadline: 23.12. at 23:59 CET

Homepage is hopefully up soon.

Some questions remain...
should the releases be downloadable at 24.12. or before and voting be started on christmas?

PS: If there are enoughr eleases (i doubt it :] ) the compo will be splittet to give composers and pixelartists better chances.

Just a few questions for Pi: I'll be going home to spend xmas with my family, and I don't have net access there. I guess that might be the case for a few other people too. Would it be possible to extend the voting deadline to sometime in january? Also, can entries be released before the compo deadline or will you be releasing everything at once on the 24th? I have an Xmas demo that I'm going to finish anyway, and would like to release/spread it before I go home.

Well...
thats actually a thing i am thinking about. Would ofcourse be a fine christmas present to have all demos released at once on 24.12. but i guess you are not the only one who has no net-access at christmas or no time checking them due to family reasons.
Probably the best would be to release the demos as they come in .
The second question concerning the deadline for voting: i don't see any problem in having a deadline set somewhen in january. Maybe something like a 2-3 week period to vote (24.12. - 7.01.)

mhh, what wrong with the Kalle Kloakk demo? ..*g* ...i like the sick humour of the demo a lot ... not to forget about the graphics. ;/ i guess Scroll and others got sick of making a 100% hard coded demo, they just needed something that looks diffrent, and it sure does, compared to the rest of the Kalle Kloakk parts.

Seems like i mixed some stuff up 'cause it was a long time ago i watched those. Still the TOM release is funny :)

Damn! Ah well, I'll do another Christmas game ;) NO! If I have done a Christmas game for the compo, I'll do another nice game alongside it.

As for the Urine thing. Best if I forget about it. I now know what to expect. Release anything you like Urine ;) I don't mind.

I am aware of scene antics now.

Next time, I'll do a demo and just 'save' it for the proper occasion in releasing it. :)

Heh. Sure, go ahead and release the Snata piccy with some scrolly text chastenizing demo coders on the pitfalls of wiring pictures. :) Introduce a baleful tune as well.

(Still embarrassed to see the multicolor picture looking a shade better than my FLI picture effort. :))

Enjoy.

yup, same thing with us (Cybernator & me) we'll manage to get the demo done before the deadline.

About the music, we have a tune but like to use another one for reasons. If any of you musicians have an unused tune in archive and like to compete in the compo plz contact me. Tune does not have to be xmas related.

I wrote about this in the email that you've never received.

Entry name: "XMAS 2002 - The Demo"

Credits:

Design: Shake and Cybernator
Code: Laze "Cybernator" Ristoski
Graphics: Bram "Shake" Kuipers
Music: Richard Bayliss

Well yes, it's by both of us (considering that Richard's tune isn't exclusive).

Hello.

I've just viewed the Snata demo entry in this 2002 C64 Xmas Compo. Nice piccie and the border effect is cool. I've also, umm, read the scrolly text... :)

Now...I shall lurk, plan and plot my devious revenge and reappear again with a demo requiring a SuperCPU, RAMLink and a CMD HD. Not to mention a few choice words in the finer art of subtle sarcasm in the scrolly text... :)

Enjoy.

That was the *nice* version of the text, you should have read the original...! =-)

(The REU emulation on CCS doesn't always work with the border effect in Snata, i'm not sure why but the old beta used to work fine and the new one just doesn't want to know!)

In case someone still reads this, I have to tell about what bad luck can do to a coder.

I gathered some useful routines and combined them as a demo. This was my first demo effort and I put many expectations to it for the xmas compo 2002.

First of all I was unable to pack the demo. I tried AB cruncher with REU support to crunch a 202 block file. The packing process was OK, but the program didn't start properly. So I'd participate with unpacked file.

I don't have internet at home, so I had to go to my school in freezing cold walking against storm -class wind. Believe me, I'm not telling lies. I got to the school and sent the file, the 21st of december, long before the deadline.

I went home for Christmas and when I got back I couldn't see my dear demo as a compo entry. Later I found out the organizer's computer break down that same day losing my entry and a couple of others. But those others had internet etc. near them and they could send their entrys another time.

I'm not begging for mercy, but just telling why christmas demo competitions are rarely organized. At least in Finland we don't have internet in every house, so I had only one chance to send my entry. Please keep this in mind next year.

Hopefully I can get my demo released in near future.
Hopefully I have better luck next time.

But what can you say? Life is a bitch and then you die...

Well...
if there is a next compo like halloween-compo or oy2k3cc i will announce it earlier so also those without inet and those who prefer snail-mail can compete. The idea for this compo came basically on one evening while chatting with a little alcohol in me...:) (don't know about Trance (or his new handle i tend to forgot).

Hope it is ok if i would include your text you wrote in here to the bonus-demo on www.church64.de/christmascompo ?

Many thanx to all who took part of the compo and send me their entries.
Much thanx also to those who voted, even more thanx too all the people giving reactions with their votes (nice and not so nice ones).

The results will be up soon.
There will also be a bonus-release that didn't made it into the compo (as read before here).

Congrats to Cybernator & Shake for winning the compo.
Releases should be soon on c64.sk and the compo-page ofcourse.

Hope next year there will even be more people taking part in it.
And hopefully there will be more people voting! There were only about 32 votes, what i think is quite lame.
