SID originals that are actually covers
This kind of information is (usually, but not always) included with STIL, but anyways, does not seem to be common knowledge here and there.
Personally, i was a bit surprised to learn about:
Zoids - Synergy - Ancestors
International Karate - Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence
Turrican Title Theme - Transformers (1986) - Escape (and the end tune, too)
Lazy Jones - Star Dust - Electronic Ensemble - It Happened Then
What else is notable, from the top of your heads? =) |

Probably not that big of a surprise to many, but for a very long time I wasn't aware that The Legendary Commando was originally composed for the NES and Arcade by Tamayo Kawamoto.
But perhaps this version of The Great Gianna Sisters Intro is somewhat less known.
Every Jarre tune is used in at least a couple of games I guess? But let's get the biggest classic out of the way: Bomb Jack |

Regarding Giana Sisters I am sure it's just a coincidence. That Tangerine Dream arp is a very simple rather typical Berlin School minor line - there are only 12 notes to choose from, after all ;)
Speaking of Tangerine Dream, Last Ninja II subtune10 covers a track from "White Eagle": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VfjJ_qcBQ9A |

Yep, one example (which was a surprise to me much later) was Loco by Ben Daglish https://www.lemon64.com/game/loco
turned out to be Equinoxe part 5:

Also (onto demos now), Sweet Infection by Arise... the first tune by Randall (Hate Bush) I always expected to be original... then later he gave me a CD mix of Polish songs ranging from 70s to early 2010s, one track in particular (I think from late 90s or early 2000s) I immediately caught it's similarities to a particular part of the SID tune. It's titled in Polish of course so I can't remember what it's called. :) He may be able to help you here. |

Talking about stuff not in STIL yet, maybe it's just me and maybe too vague, but I always found Ghosts 'n Goblins (ingame music at around 00:30, about the time you normally kill the first sub boss within level 1, that fire-spitting flying screaming thingie before taking the first ferry) was heavily stealing bass line and also otherwise somewhat similar to
Cyndi Lauper's She-Bop
PS: Talking about Cyndi Lauper, her offical Goonie's song Goonies 'R' Good Enough was so massacred beyond recognition by Fitzpatrick in the C64 Goonies Game that Cyndi herself would not recognize it I guess |

That kind of similarities happen (and not seldom) even without knowing the other tune :) Its not a "cover" because its similar for a few notes.
(edit: eg there are similar parts in good old "Just the two of us" and the modfile Timbaland "covered". It happens :)) |

STILL:
TITLE: Acidjazzed Evening [from the Amiga MOD module]
ARTIST: Janne Suni (Tempest)
COMMENT: American producer and hip hop artist Timbaland (Timothy Z. Mosley) allegedly plagiarized parts of GRG's version of 'Acidjazzed Evening' for use in the song "Do It" on the 2006 album Loose by Nelly Furtado. This eventually led to a large controversy where lawyers for both GRG and Janne Suni became involved.
---
The result: Tempest was allegedly compensated off-court (quote from wikipedia: "The copyright dispute was eventually settled out of court for an undisclosed sum.[2]"). GRG 's claim failed and he got nothing. C64.sk had 3 minutes of fame and backlink from wikipedia. And I had a bitter taste in mu mouth ever since... naaaaah, it's an old story. I don't care anymore... ... or do I?

Mmmmm sure, but Chris Hülsbeck has made some floaty arpy stuff and said Tangerine Dream are his heroes on Facebook (NOT talking about Giana or anything)... I'm not saying it's a bad thing, and obviously it's far from "a cover" but still, I think there could be something more to it than just total coincidence. |

A whole other question that comes up with this is, if now someone made a C64 tune cover and the original is actually already a cover, but unbeknownst to the person who releases a C64 cover as music on the internet, or even perform it live without crediting the original composer and thus even "forgetting" to inform certain music rights management societies like GEMA or TEOSTO.
Let's just hope it will stay a well kept secret. |

In dumb layman terms (and let's hope I'm not confusing things too much), GRG's case was thrown out of US court because his music wasn't registered for copyright. Anyway this is offtopic here. So better start a new thread if you want to continue discussing it. |

@ "Covering" without even knowing / "heavily inspired by" (consciously or not)
Sure there's alway the problem that J.S. Bach, Mozart or The Beatles might have used a sequence of notes before you come up with it though you never listened to their tune ;)
Or some musician has listened to a song on the radio, forgets about it and in the evening isn't aware where the melody in his mind comes from - where does inspiration end and theft start, indeed frquently a matter for the courts... |

LOL OK, I will go hang my head in shame in the corner now! Stupid Spotify said it's from an album "Ultima Thule" from 1971, but that seems to be completely fake news. Some of the later anthologies said "Huckebees gianadream" was recorded in 1981, but I can't find it released before 2008 either... Time to start going through old TD live recordings ;-). |

5 notes, that play after those two. But I agree with you. Btw. I was carefuly listening to Richie's song and they didn't use this awesome progression anywhere later. Which is kind of cool ;-) |

I read in the comment section of the C64 Title Tune of "Nemesis The Warlock" on youtube, that it allegedly quotes parts of the Soundtrack of "The Long Good Friday" (1980), composed by Francis Monkman, and lo and behold: at 1:35:00ff (remastered Blu-Ray timing), there is indeed a portion (starting at 0:04 in this video snippet) of a very similiar melody as in Nemesis The Warlock. Not only the same notes, but also repeated twice. I wanted to check the OST for the track name, but it sadly is somewhat of a damn rarity.
Ofcourse Rob has added like 99% awesomeness around that bit, but i find it is some interesting trivia. |

for a very long time i though JCH's "sandra secret land" was original .. as it didn't chart in the UK..
the JT accelorator mix is YES's owner of a lonely heart (the trevor horn era)
It's a case of how clued you are about chart music etc. I notice much love for "DM" in c64 demos.. martins a very nice bloke.
Also a few c64 folk are doing pro audio stuff.. not gonna say who , but synth presets (done by a vibrant) and a cakewalk synth were done by a scener
sure there are plenty more who got into DSP etc. due to the sid chip
