FaceBook
Myspace had its day, and now it seems to be facebook's turn. I was wondering how many people are actually on there?.
i'm here : http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=731207638
if anyone want to add me, just leave a message with your "scene name".
i've also noticed lots of c64 related groups on there but no c64 applications?, who knows maybe if some of us join some one will create a c64 application even if its only a little sidplayer jukebox sort of thing. |

I don't like Facebook, although I have a login.
The sole fact that it asks for your password to your email account(s) to harvest addresses is a big no-no for me.
Sure, it's voluntary, but still it's bad practice. |

@Rough: It's easy to maintain the real life aspect of life. Harder for me to keep the c64 aspect going. I often get bored and wander around aimlessly and before you know it, the day has gone.
My facebook is all english, or at least close to it, haha.
And for the record.. I just added 80+ paper drawings today. Dating from 1985-present day. I've more everywhere, just have to gather them and scan. Kinda wore myself out with the scanning today though, hahaha.

I only go on there just to contact friends (some who I haven't seen for years), add some odd photos, get tagged, or write some worth-reading statement on the "Wall". ... the rest is absolutely pointless and time wasting to me. Sorry if I deliberately deny being invited on these online games like Farmville, but that's because I have better things to do in my spare time than go on Facebook all day.
I remember being invited to Facebook by many people during the early years of when it first came out, but I denied the invitation because I had this horrible feeling that my privacy would be exposed to unknown people the world... this was 4-5 years ago!... funny how some people and the news have now only started to realise how dangerous Facebook can be! In Britain there's been many cases of manslaughter and attacks (and killings) thanks to people on Facebook. It's also caused many other problems like not performing well at work, kids not doing their GCSEs properly due to distraction with Facebook apps on their iPhones, etc etc etc. In fact most of the news I've been reading this year mentions Facebook (or Twitter) all the time. It just shows you that a lot of people in the world can't live without it now... pretty worrying if you ask me really... I wonder what would happen if Facebook was hijacked and became inaccessible? People would go ape-shit! |

I've been through the "add everyone and his dog that you've ever been in touch with" phase and finally deleted that account because the background noise became too high. The whole idea of building up a network with more than hundred people didn't work for me at all. It even had a contrary effect, conversations flattened and "real" contact even halfway ceased with friends I used to call regularly.
Nowadays I have a new account which only serves to stay in touch with real good friends, part of them work or live abroad. During my Facebook abstinence of around 3 months I didn't miss most of the old Facebook friends (no offence, most of you were in my friendlist), except for a very few which I now readded. |

after having used it for few days I can honestly advice to ignore Facebook, with 64 freaks I can get in contact here or irc, and "real" life friends usually use the good old telephone. The so much praised apps are one big joke and a lot of common features of similar communities are missing, site design, unlike myspace, is completely missing. I don't really get the hype except for that it's very easy to use. |

@Marauder: the Big Brother Awards are always a nice read, but the Facebook article sounds a bit too paranoid to me. I mean people put their information in every community or homepage. And of course those informations are scanned too for commercial interests. No big deal that Fb does it as well. They just do it bigger and more successful. |

I think the article fits quite well and doesn't sound too paranoid to me... maybe not today, but sure in future when this would be the only (or most) way to communicate...
and you even get more and more tracked by all those other websites you visit as well, even if you're not logged into FB (all those pages with the like-buttons and stuff)...
and yes, most people do post a lot of information on those communities, not knowing the consequences... but nothing is for free! (c;

I don't really get into Facebook too much myself. My wife is the one that constantly nagged at me to reactivate my account. The 2 or 3 weeks It was deactivated........was bliss
So I felt this time around, I might as well make it interesting and started up a group, and made a "page".
I'll never use twitter because when you tweet, it makes you a twit... No offense to those that use it, but it's true.
I really don't like Facebook either, but how else can one keep the wife quite? |

Nonsense, the hype about Facebook will pass by like any other and people will turn to other new "amazing" things.
And e-mail (I mean REAL ones with monkey tail) will never cease.
Look at eBay, it's quite out nowadays. Anybody remembers Napster, Netscape or those 2.0 interactive 3D worlds? Nobody cares two hoots about them in 2011.
And if people are that stupid to give their e-mail passwords to other companies, they are hopeless cases anyhow, sorry. |

Rough: I don't say it will survive, but it has the biggest chance. It's totally mainstream. It doesn't allow you to customize the system so it de-facto becomes standard for everyone (as are phones, tv's etc.). Don't need to say much arguments. Simply it's as mainstream and primitive as it gets and that's most important for every thing to survive. If they won't overdo it, there is a big chance it will work for next tens of years. And that's enough for me to count with it in my plans around internet. |

You are right, it's so much mainstream to have a big chance of surviving and staying standard for decades, still I think the hype factor will decrease. In Fb you got to do more yourself than watching TV and that one remains the unbeatable number one in the race of "how low can you go". ;) |

I was not referring to the actual content of the medium, but the way it provides content, no matter what quality that is; and television is unbeatable. Just lean back and turn off.
Radio would be even better, but that obviously doesn't catch the user's full range of senses and forces too much self-activity on the listener. (Nobody likes staring constantly at a white wall while listening to the radio.. I guess) |

Spread the word to all lazy american sysops with disk drives full of petscii art and logs from their boards.

I know a few. And they are frigging stubborn/lazy about handing over their disks despite my warnings of bitrot. They HAVE them, but for whatever reason they just don't want to share.
I find that American ex-sceners have a more jaded outlook on this old stuff. A few months ago, I had lunch with Rad Man/TSM and The Impaler/TKO and Matt scoffed at me for "still being into the Commodore." Sadly, his is not an uncommon reaction from my old Commodore buddies.
I am still in contact with quite a few of my old "scene friends", many of which still have their collections and BBS files. I have been after them for YEARS to dig their disks out and loan them to me, but no dice.
I'll keep plugging away, though. :P

What I want to know is who is "her older brother". If it wasn't for his "list of contacts" then we wouldn't have this shit happening. It must be someone who knows us in the scene. Come forward please... it's starting to get boring!
btw... I know there are many on here who couldn't give a toss about FB, but many sceners I respect are on there and the last thing I want is trolls like "Daria" going around on their timeline/photos and stalking them. ... this is why I don't post my whole life on there. When I left it in the past I warned many of you about this in an email. Penny's dropped now, hasn't it?
