Why of course, I was (mostly) kidding.

Anyway, IMO the commercial nature of games is repelling, and it will always put them underneath even the worst demoscene release for me.

A free, high-quality game with an outstanding gameplay might be a different story, but still, I have yet to see one.

which boils down to charset scrolling > nice full screen graphics scrolling. doesnt compute even if you look at a game as a purely technical achievement. it could be that you`re missing the exciting loftiness of intro scroll texts like "WE SAT ON THE BENCH, FOR MANY YEARS, WE GAVE YOU LAUGHS AND SOMETIMES TEARS, WE HAVE A WAY, ALL OF OUR OWN, AS FOR STYLE, WE STAND ALONE..."

Dead ugly intro > mega-bestest-poppiest C64 game. My personal opinion that is - you don't have to agree at all.

And what's this game-übergayness on CSDb lately anyway? Lemon64 is that way, homos ---->

And the rest, do FREE stuff. Demos.

@radiantx: All valid points.

Well, both yes and no. Earlier traversed areas are easier with new equipment and newer areas are still difficult. That was the goal, though, maybe not realised as good as it could have been.

Regarding the music/sfx, this seems to divide people as well. It was a 'new' take on the 'old' problem. At least someone have tried this now.

>> and I do hope to see something
>> new and even better from you

And I hope someone else give this genre a try so I can have some fun too... :-)

This game has received a lot praise, and rightly so. I own a gold edition original, and it's the best new C64 game for a very, very, very long time.

However, I feel I have to play the devil's advocate here, just because nobody else has, except for a rather blunt comment by GT. Some elaborate and constructive criticism is hopefully welcome. First off, I feel the controls are a bit sluggish; the gravity is too high while the movement speed is too slow. Secondly, I don't really feel that the weapon/armour system adds all that much to the gameplay, compared to similar games like the Castlevania (post-SotN) and Metroid series. I would have liked more dynamic powerups; a lot of the fun in these exploration games is becoming a lot more powerful as you get further into the game. I haven't had the time to complete the game yet, so I may be wrong, but so far it feels like the new equipment doesn't really do anything nifty - all benefits seem to come with equal drawbacks.

I would have preferred a two-channel in-game soundtrack with one channel left for sound effects. A lot of the ambience in these kinds of arcade adventures comes from the music.

The graphics... are too dark. It's fine (and desirable) with dark areas in a game like this, but here the ambient colour in every single screen seems to be black. I do think the background tiles would've benefitted from a more varied palette, like in the Metroid 64 mockup on PixelJoint. Not impossible, and even if it would've been too hard on the raster time when scrolling (which it shouldn't be, leaving well more than half a frame of free rastertime with speed 4 scrolling if done correctly), reducing it to one freely selectable colour per tile instead of per char would be faster and still look good.

Just some things I've thought about. That said, it's still a good game, but there's room for improvement, and I do hope to see something new and even better from you. :-)

about as clever as moaning about someone who points someone else to this entry ... o_O

There is no other option than doing it like this. There is a crack/trainer out there somewhere. We are fine with that. If you really want it, you'll find it. To moan about the fact that the game is not available here - on the most well known C64 database there is - well, it's just not very clever.

@GT: Lol.

The trainers/docs offer those wanting to test the game and are hopeless at gaming to overcome their fears. It was no simple "intro link".

Regarding downloading the game if you're too poor (global financial crisis etc) or don't want to buy the game. There are more places than Earth, so search beyond the stars...

Really fun game, good presentation and the plot was woven in very well indeed. The best we've had in ages.

If a sequel eventuates, I suggest more work on the multiplex routine (busy screens were sometimes slow).

Leech it from where it is available, if you are 1337 enough :-). A CC might come in handy though, as the game is pretty big.

@iAN CooG:
Only partly true what you say... at least here in Germany. You are allowed to create own copies of software and even possess copies of software someone else did IF:

1.) you own the original
2.) you or someone else did not "deactivate" a copy-proctection of any kind.

I have not seen the original disk but I assume it has no protection and you are able to make copies of it without any special skills or software. That the original game was improved by installing trainers and linking an intro does not matter.

Even if you do NOT possess an original, just a copy and later decide to buy the original you did not committ any crime. This process is called "healing".

Just mit 2 cents ;).

not that this brilliant piece of skillfull intro linking and docs adding is worth wasting Perffs server space on(rather the opposite) but the Ptv cracks are all with download links so infact the csdb rules dont regulate it.

If someone doesn't get it yet, we choose not to upload here because we respect both CSDb rules (will be deleted anyway being still a commercially sold game, see Protovision cracks) and game producers and authors, which deserve their money for such a brilliant game.
And no, owning the original doesn't grant the right to receive the crack, it doesn't work like that :D

A rather fast list would look like something like this:

Ghost 'n' Goblins, Buggy Boy, Pool (the original released by Commodore in '83) and Crillion.

Those are games i still enjoy playing today and which have stood the test of time. The Last Ninja and the likes are unplayable today, even tho' i worshiped them back then. NO shmups on the C64 are playable today for example, and then i got some 1000+ hours play time of Armalyte for example. Are you satisfied?

You could read my review (badly translated from my swedish game blog) of the game on Psytronik's site. Have a nice day.

A game worth buying! A phrase i haven't used for any game on any system for the last 10 years or so. I'm a couple hours into it, and rank this top 5 ever on the C64. BUY! BUY! BUY! 2 GBP for a Digital Download...
