Testers needed: 5 luma vs 9 luma VICII
mathop on lemon noticed a strange artefact of the 6569R1 VICII, which needs further investigation (see here)
We need to collect more data here. (It might turn out as a way to detect the 5-luma VICII in software). If you are able to open up your C64 so you can report back the ASSY and the VICII type, please take a couple minutes and do the following:
- run the spritetrash.prg program from here
- report the ASSY and the exact markings on the VICII
The program will show 8*3 bits on top/left of the screen, on most setups it will just be ........................
If the program detects the expected pattern for 6569R1, it shows green border, else red border.
- report the border color, and if it is red border and NOT all "........................" also tell the pattern it shows
Interesting are tests on all kind of C64s and Videochips, but in particular the R1 ones (with 5 lumas) have to be confirmed (also NTSC would be very interesting)
TIA! |

Saw this today when I googled about 5 lumas. :)
I have two PAL C64s with ASSY 407 and R1 VIC (5 lumas). Both show red border, and the pattern is like in the post from encore for his R1 VIC. One dot, some stars, three dots, two stars, three dots, stars.
Seems the detection works!
EDIT: Now that my C64 has warmed up a little, suddenly the border color turned to green! It stays green when restarting the program. The star pattern remains intact, though! |

Today I tested this in another C64, again a 407 board, but with a 6569 R3 in ceramic, 9 lumas. I am testing this C64 as I repaired it, but it seems as long as it is cold, Paperboy shows some little grahpic glitches, which disappear when it is warmed up? Weird.
So I also started the spritetrash.prg.
Result:
Cold: Green border, dots + stars
Warm: Red border, dots only!
WTF? A very cool program, this 'spritetrash.prg'. It's the only program except Paperboy I found so far that changes behavior when the C64 warmed up. |

Indeed a cool program! You will see this kind of behaviour with ANE and LAX also. The magic constant will change depending on temperature on many machines. |
